Making Money the Old-Fashioned Way - Grass Cutting Services

!±8± Making Money the Old-Fashioned Way - Grass Cutting Services

When asked about making money during the summer months, many of us think back to the simple days of mowing lawns around the neighborhood. The manual labor and useful service were a good, honest way to earn some extra spending money. We're here to let you know that grass cutting and lawn maintenance will never go out of style. In fact, starting your own landscaping and lawn maintenance service can be incredibly profitable. Here is a compilation of the tools you will need and the services you should consider to start making money as a professional lawn service.

Tools

Keep your equipment updated, clean, and serviced to ensure that it works reliably and lasts a long time. Replacing machinery without getting the maximum use out of it will cut into your profits and hinder your goal of making money.

• Lawnmower: Having a range of lawnmowers in different sizes and for different applications is critical to making money in the lawn service industry. Be prepared to trim in residential areas, larger gardens, parks, and even golf courses. A cylinder mower is ideal for small yards and gives a short, trim lawn. A rotary mower that is powered by an engine will find the most use, but also require routine maintenance. A cordless mower is battery operated and therefore runs more quietly than the rotary mowers, and also tends to be more lightweight. Large jobs will call for a riding mower, and the most technologically advanced lawnmowers are categorized as hover mowers and robotic mowers.

• Edger: For careful trimming around gardens, you will want to have an edger on hand. This tool is used to cut the grass along flowerbeds or architectural details like dry steam beds or partial rock walls where a lawnmower could damage delicate plants, or be damaged by heavy rocks. The professional, finished look you create will speak volumes about your lawn service company, and a great reputation means you'll be making money for months and years to come.

• Chemicals: Standard chemicals to keep in each of your service trucks include a weed killer like Roundup, fertilizer for neglected plants, and pesticides of various strengths. You may also consider keeping a can of wasp/hornet spray nearby because you never know exactly what you'll uncover each spring.

Services

• Cutting: Mowing grass for clients on a biweekly or even weekly basis is the ideal schedule for making money. You can plant new annuals, trees, or shrubs, trim and prune hedges, and weed gardens. Lawn sowing and fertilizing are other services you can add to your repertoire.

• Cleanup: After mowing and trimming, be sure to rake up leaves and clippings in order to bag up and dispose of the lawn waste. You may find a local composting center where you can drop off the trimmings. If you are willing to extend your work season, you may also find that snow removal and gutter cleaning are winning services for making money.

• Pest Prevention: Your lawn service should offer pest spraying solutions. Mulching can also be done in areas that are prone to weeds.

Landscape Edging - Defining Your Choices

!±8± Landscape Edging - Defining Your Choices

Landscape edging adds beauty and value to any landscape. Whether you are a professional landscaper or a beginner tackling your own home project, edging adds the polished look to make your landscape stand out from the rest. There are a various ways to utilize borders and edging in your landscape. You can use them to define walkways or paths. Separate the yard from the patio or section off a piece of your property to create a rock garden.

There are various types of edging with their own different designs and constructed out of many different materials. Make sure you choose the landscape edging that is right for your project to ensure a satisfactory outcome. Are you thinking about constructing a raised garden? Raised gardens can be constructed quickly by using landscape borders. What about a sandbox for all the children in your family to enjoy for years to come? Sandboxes are another backyard addition that can be constructed easily using landscape borders.

Most borders or edging are made from wood, metal, brick or plastic. Wood borders could be railroad ties, natural bamboo or a simple 2 by 4. Brick borders come in many different shapes, sizes and designs. A scalloped brick edger is a popular choice. Natural stone borders add natural beauty to any project. Plastic or synthetic borders may be a durable choice for such as separating unruly grass and a patio. Grass that needs to be trimmed will be up against the edging and an edging that can withstand the torture of a weed eater would be a great choice.

Before starting a project of any kind you must determine what type of edging you need to use. If raised gardens are something you want to construct, keep in mind that all gardens need water and some edging may not be able to withstand continuous moisture. Wood is an economical choice for raised gardens but may erode after years of watering. Bricks or stone edging are a nice choice but could cost a little more.

Sandboxes are a child's joy and should be constructed with careful consideration of the little ones. Choosing to make a sandbox that is edged with some kind of concrete or brick edging may be a little dangerous for small child to be playing around. Landscape edging made of a soft wood or a synthetic plastic material may be best. Sandboxes in general are dry so moisture may not be such a concern.

With some simple planning your landscape will be a prized possession that will be enjoyed for years to come. Choosing the right landscape edging for your project will make all the difference in the world.

Selecting The Perfect Trimmer Or Edger For Your Lawn Care

!±8± Selecting The Perfect Trimmer Or Edger For Your Lawn Care

Apart from the lawn mower, the edger and trimmer is likely to be the tool used almost as much. Not many lawn mowers will be capable of reaching everywhere, since most garden lawns will butt up against a patio, wall, or have several trees on the property. As a result, the only way to maintain the lawn is by using a trimmer of some type.

The basic lawn edger is equipped with dual blades and attached to a long wooden handle. These are relatively lightweight, require no gasoline, and there's no need for a cord to get in the way. If the blades are maintained dirt free and sharp, they will be able to adequately cut 35 feet of pathway in just a few minutes.

But they will need a lot of muscular exertion. For those gardening enthusiasts that enjoy pottering around outside, but are getting along in years, they may not be ideal. It's not going to be fun maintaining a trim looking lawn if the end result is sore arms and a stiff back.

The next level up is an electric trimmer. Reasonably priced and simple to use, they remove difficult to reach grass by carving it off with a swiftly spinning plastic string. The cartridge head that holds the trimmer line is quick to replace, can last for up to several months and costs under to replace.

A further benefit over the manual edger is that they can often be used in a variety of positions, and in situations that the manual tool is unable to work. If you lawn is adjacent to an outbuilding, for example a shed, it can often be tough to use a pole trimmer to eliminate the grass. But the automatic feed trimmer will work perfectly in there conditions. It will not do any damage to the shed and rapidly removes the grass.

A further style of power trimmer uses a small gas powered motor. They tend to be rather noisy, but the main setback is really the weight. They are much heavier than their electric trimmer counterpart. On the plus side, they are not fitted with a cable to drag behind.

As you will not be restricted by cable length there are no limits to where it may be used. If you have a huge garden, or have a need to tidy up certain spots that are not equipped with a nearby power supply, using an electric powered trimmer can be a problem. In these situations, a gas powered trimmer is ideal.

A gas powered edger will also be equipped with much more power. So if you are plagued with thick weeds, overgrowing brush, or other debris that you want to cut down to size, this model will do the job. Although, slightly more expensive, they will last for years and the cost will be worth the effect saved.

What to Do When Your Lawn Mower Needs a Tune Up

!±8± What to Do When Your Lawn Mower Needs a Tune Up

A lawn mower is a heavily-used machine, so like all machines it needs a little tune-up now and then. By taking the time to tune up your lawn mower, you will keep it running in good working condition for a longer period of time, and thus will be able to save on its repair costs. You will also notice that the mower will run more smoothly and efficiently, so this will make the mowing job even easier than if you had to contend with a noisy sputtering machine.

Thankfully, you do not have to tune up the machine every time you want to use it though. Just once a year is good enough, so it's usually recommended to do the tune up in spring when you first take it out for use during the season.

Before you do anything, please remember to read your user manual first and take note of the safety precautions. Then before you take apart the mower, remove the spark plug first so that it cannot be started by accident.

The last thing you want is to have the sharp metal cutting blades start spinning wildly in front of you when you have your hands in the depths of the machine. This is an accident waiting to happen, so taking the precaution of removing the spark plug first will ensure you will have a safe tune up session.

Once you have removed the spark plug, the next thing to do is a general cleaning of the mower. Use a scrapper to remove any accumulated dirt or grass clippings from underneath the mower, and then check that all the holes, ducts and debris channels are not blocked.

If the blades are dull, this is a good time to have them sharpened. If you feel up to it, you can try sharpening the blades yourself, but you must be extra careful because the curved blades are harder to sharpen for the inexperienced. A safer way is to dismantle the blades and take them to a professional to be sharpened for the best results.

If you are sharpening the blades yourself, make sure they are replaced properly and the retaining screws or bolts are tightened securely. And if any of the blades is severely chipped or is showing signs of wear, you should replace it with a new blade for safety reasons.

Then check the engine belts to ensure they are still taut and not worn out. If any part of the belt is frayed, it's time to have the belt changed. Just get a replacement from your local retail store and follow the simple instructions to change the belt.

This is now a good time to change the engine oil. Again, it's a simple affair that goes a long way to help prolong the working life of the mower. Just make sure you dispose of the oil in an environmentally-friendly way. Do not just dump it into the nearest drain, but take it to your local car lubrication shop instead for proper disposal.

After that, check the air filter to see if it needs changing. If it's a paper filter, just swop out the old one and put in the new one. But if it's a foam filter, you will need to soak it with a few drops of engine oil first before installing it back into the mower.

Now the last thing is to put back the spark plug. But you should change the spark plug and put back a brand new one instead of the old one. This helps your engine run more smoothly and efficiently, thus reducing the amount of gas used.

Patio Ideas - Stepping Out With Stone Patio Designs And Brick Patio Patterns

!±8± Patio Ideas - Stepping Out With Stone Patio Designs And Brick Patio Patterns

Tired of retro concrete with a boring brick trim? Or perhaps the pressure treated border timbers holding back a creeping riot of crab grass down the middle of your patio or drive? Making a stone patio design change has never been easier. New materials like interlocking paving stones, improved engineering and installation open a new world of landscape patio ideas to add class, and value to your home and lifestyle.

Outdoor Patio Ideas - The Creative "Ah Hah" Insight. Where does a new, bold and classy patio design idea come from? For starters, "think outside the box" ...view your property fresh ... eliminate all the conventional square edges and rectangles, and see whether new shapes and a wholly different integration of plants, patio and drive can be created.

Step #1 - Measurements And Layouts. Take your time. Measure your present drive or patio space. Add any features or re-shaping that you'd like to consider. Once you have the gross dimensions worked out ... or square footage, you're ready to look at some of the contemporary stone patio designs ... drawing from the wide range of interlocking earth hued long lasting textured stones ... or perhaps an innovative brick paving pattern to highlight your property.

Step #2 - Who's The Right Contractor? Stone patio construction requires engineering knowledge, special measuring tools, excavating equipment and a trained eye for space and layouts. Unless you're on the extreme edge of the do-it-yourselfer Bell Curve, you'll be looking at local landscape construction firms to do the heavy lifting. Here's the "inside scoop" on how to gauge the best artisans:-

* Tip #1 - Background Business Stuff. The background 'business stuff" you need to directly look over includes (a). a copy of the contractor's license to operate (b). evidence of workers comp coverage and (c). evidence of accident and property liability insurance, to insulate you-as-customer from potential legal actions based on the contractor's fault.

* Tip #2 - Examples Of Job Performance. Here's where your critical eye comes into focus. You want naturally to see current site work, in order to get a feel for how the contractor works, type of equipment, whether he shows up on schedule and so on. However, a deeper time-based view of the contractor's skill will exist in past work ... jobs that he performed 2 to 5 years ago! These are the sites where the "product quality" reveals itself. Did the patio or drive foundation buckle or sag? Did the paver stones or bricks move around? Did the edges collapse? Did crabgrass and other vegetation take over?

* Tip #3 - Get Customer References. You can't talk to enough customers, or competent referring tradesmen, when you're selecting your contractor. After all, you're making a substantial investment in your property. You want your new stone patio design to look terrific ... and last for years with minimal maintenance and cost.

Step #3 - Stone Patio Construction. Going from a stone patio design to a finished landscape is all about engineering know-how ... building proper foundations, understanding the various materials and how they'll integrate to create strength and long lasting durability.

* Site Prep. First, your site is "prepped" ...old stuff like concrete, wood borders, excess gravel and so on are removed. Your patio or drive is marked and elevation or depths marked and measured with strings.

* Establishing Level "True" Grade. Small "cats" and back hoes scrape and re-position material, drawing down to around 7 inches below the final elevation. By hand, workman screed the patio or drive area, fine-tuning the grade so that it's 'true' and level, even where it naturally slopes away for drainage.

* Sand And Compacting. Refined sand is spread across the patio 'field', then compacted and screed-leveled until a perfect grade and substrate has been created ... at an elevation about 3 inches below "final grade", or at the grade where your selected paving stone's dimensions will complete the elevation.

* Laying The Brick Patio Pattern. No matter whether you've selected bricks or an interlocking paving stone design, the next step is where the patio or drive "field" is actually set out ... all the stones or bricks are laid down, true to your stone patio design. Dry sand is spread over the bricks or paver stones, followed by careful compacting which shakes and distributes sand into all the cracks. Result? Sand plus stones plus substrate "interlock" to form a solid, long wear surface.

Bottom Line. Learn more about the patio ideas including stone patio designs and patio landscaping ideas that will create an outdoor living environment that will add a new lifestyle touch.
